Food thief given a year to get treated
The Straits Times, Part B

About the Article:
A woman suffering from bulimia stole food from a supermarket to satisfy her urge to eat but was caught. Instead of being jailed, she has to go on a year-long treatment plan, take part in an eating disorder programme and attend self-help group meetings. This is because the shoplifted items are related to her eating disorder. After her treatment plan, her lawyer will give an update on it before the judge decides what sentence to mete out.

Thoughts:

I thought that letting the woman to go on treatment first before sending her to jail is a better decision. Instead of sending her to jail over and over again, why not let her be treated so that history will not repeat itself? She had been convicted of theft nine times since 1986. Out of these nine times, she had been sent to jail at least four times. If she was treated earlier, she will not be convicted of theft for NINE TIMES. And she will probably lead a better life because her bulimia causes her to suffer from depression and impulse control disorder. Therefore letting woman to go on treatment first before sending her to jail is a very wise move and it should apply to other kinds of crimes. Perhaps, the crime rates will decrease as a result.

This article seems to be in line with a post about judges given more leeway in passing verdicts by Kaixin. Have a read. I agree with you that this is a good idea. Afterall this may be able to cure her completely. Justice is about humanity afterall.
