(4) Magazine Review

Reader Digest
Title: fat, Inc
Author: Andy Simmons
Summary: Americans are collectively about 3,276,586,860 kilograms overweight.
America’s growing waistband is a disturbing trend that has become the scourge of the nation, leading to diabetes, heart disease and higher health insurance costs.
This can also be looked as a great business opportunity. The medical community ha long recognized that there is big money to be made off ‘big’ patients: Americans spend $82 billion a year on weight-loss products and services. Manufacturers have reaped fortunes as hospitals have stocked up on equipment built to cater to an increasingly obese clientele: roomier CT scanners, longer syringes that penetrate many layers of fats, even larger ambulances.

Reflection: Everything has its good and bad sides including being fat. From designer wear to house wares, companies are jumping on the bigger bandwagon, trying to cater to a demographic that has been, until recently, grossly underserved, especially when one consider that more than 30 percent are obese.
The heavyset sets do face unique obstacles. That new dress may be large enough, but is it stylish? Will the seatbelt fit? Are there resorts that keep their special needs in mind? A decade ago, the answers were probably no. Not anymore for now. Being fat nowadays is a business opportunity for medical industries and ‘clothing’ industries. Most obese people need to consult doctors to maintain their health condition and they need to buy plus-size clothing.

Ps: ‘Is the XXL-ing of America a look into our own future?’
