Brief summary:Piracy around the 'Horn of Africa' has gone out of control, with the Somali pirates claiming their biggest prize yet; a super-tanker loaded with $100 million worth of oil(in barrels, of course)
Reflection: Piracy in the gulf of Aden has always been a problem, but it got the attention of the international community when a super-tanker was captured(you can say it was pirated). I think that these vessels should employ armed guards from security firms. No navy, including the US navy, can patrol the whole of the Indian ocean, and even as navies of different nations collaborate, they still can't guarantee total protection. These pirates are armed to the teeth, carrying weapons ranging from automatics to rocket-propelled grenades. If not dealt with seriously, they may eventually control the seas near the 'Horn of Africa'.
Consequences: More security will be provided to fight the pirates, although I doubt it will have any immediate effects given that the area of piracy is just too large to patrol. The Somali pirates though will still try to push their luck and hope to capture more ships without any intervention. Hopefully, the number of such cases will dwindle, but not in the short-term.

Why so serious?

Do refer to an article over the last weekend that also talked about piracy in our region. It seems that it is now treacherous time to be at sea and the pirates are turning more vicious and violent.
