Twilight [Book Review]

The book I am going to do book review on is Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I strongly recommend those who like romance stories to read this book. It is really popular and is made into a movie. The movie will be show casting in America on the 21ST of November 2008. I don’t know when it will be show casting is Singapore though. It is PG13, so I guess friends of my age who are really interested in Twilight can go and see it.

Twilight is a romance story. It is one of the four books written by Stephanie Meyer. It is about a love story between a human girl, Bella Swan and a vampire, Edward Cullen.

Edward Cullen is a vampire who is over a hundred years old. He is stuck is a form of a 17 year old boy. He a “vegetarian” vampire, which means he do not feed on human blood, but on animals’ blood instead. However, that doesn’t mean he do not have the thirst for human blood. In order to live in peace with the human, he and his family need to feed on animal blood instead of human blood, but animal blood is not as sweet as human blood, and is barely enough to control their thirst for human blood, which means they will have to have strict discipline of themselves.

To others, his family seems like every other normal human family, but they are just really a few vampires that lead the same ‘vegetarian lifestyle’ living together under the same roof. Unlike other vampires, they love and care for each other, and believe that human life is very precious and should not be killed just for their blood. The family is made up of Carlisle, the father, Esme, the mother, Edward, the eldest brother, Rosalie and Emmet, who are a couple, and the latest members of the family are lice and Jasper, who are a couple too.

Bella Swan is a very pretty girl and shy who is very clumsy and falls quite a lot. She is very prone to dangers too, and is often nearly killed by one accident or another. However, despite being a teenager, she is mature and selfless. Her parents are divorced and she moved away from a dark, quiet town called “Forks” to a vigorous, sprawling city called “Phoenix”. When she is seventeen, her mother fell in love with a man called Phillips. In order not to be a burden to them, Bella moved back to Forks to stay with her father, who is still a bachelor. She studies in a school called Forks High School.

Normally, a person who is sucked dry by a vampire will die. But if a person is bitten by a vampire, he or she will turn into a vampire if his or her blood isn’t being sucked finished. The transformation from a human to a vampire normally takes three days and is extremely painful. Once a vampire, one might have a special ability. Carlisle Cullen transformed Edward into a vampire in 1918, to spare him death from the Spanish influenza epidemic in Chicago. Edward Cullen have the ability of reading a person’s or a vampire’s mind. He studies at Forks High School too.

Bella is in a same Biology class as Edward. Edward found out that Bella’s blood smells the sweetest, and it is almost irresistible for him. He also found out that she is the only human with a mind he cannot read. Edward tried his best to control the enormous urge to suck Bella’s blood, but he could not stop himself from being curious about Bella, who is shy, pretty and most importantly, with a mind that he cannot read. He tried to get to know her more, but before he knows it, he is hopelessly in love with her. He is mesmerized by how mature and selfless Bella is and is determined to protect her for the rest of her life.

Bella, on the other hand, fell in love with Edward at once when she saw him. It was love at first sight. She is in love with this tall, slim and wiry man that is extremely handsome. Edward seems perfect to Bella, and Bella almost cannot believe that she have such a perfect guy as her boyfriend.

Bella discovered that Edward is a vampire from a friend, Jacob Black. Edward confessed to Bella that he is truly a vampire too. When Bella is asked if she is afraid of Edward, she said no, when every other human would have been scared stiff.

Bella became Edward’s girlfriend. Despite the torturous thirst Edward suffered every time he goes out with Bella, he suppressed it as he love Bella too much to take her life away. Life would be meaningless without each other. They overcome many obstacles together and really enjoy each other’s company. That’s the end of the story for the first book of the whole series, Twilight.

I like this book because I like the way Stephanie Meyer describe everything details in the book. She made she character’s thoughts very detailed too. The words used by Stephanie Meyer are very touching as well. In the book, Edward said to Bella, “Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars- points of light and reason... And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.” I like what Stephanie Meyer uses similes and metaphors in the book. It was fantastic.

I also like the way Bella rejected other boys who fancied her other than Edward. It was quite hilarious. I do not know how the content of the story will be like when I first read the story book, but I kind of expect the ending because most romance stories have happy endings, or else they would be classified under tragic stories instead.

I would like to recommend this book to my friends because I think it will definitely improve one’s English if he or she finishes the four series of Twilight, ( Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn) to get used to how Stephanie Meyer structure her sentences and how she uses some nice vocabulary in her stories. Her stories are quite easy to understand too. Twilight is really a nice book, or it would not have so many fans globally, and it would not have been made into a movie.

I will not be doing book reviews for other series of Twilight, so those who are interested in the ending of Twilight can read up other series of Twilight or catch the movie, Twilight.

This is a short clip on the movie. Heh heh heh~
