Title: More help for needy families
Section: Straits times-(home page A1)
Overview:
With the economic downturn likely to hit the lower-income families the hardest, the government yesterday announced additional financial help for those who need it. One such example is that childcare centre subsidies for low-income families (those with monthly household income under $1,800) will be enhanced from Jan 1. It is also working on being quicker to respond to applications for social aid and aims to be more flexible in helping “sandwiched” families.
Meanwhile, the number of people seeking help at meet-the-people sessions had risen from 60 to 80. Most live in rental, two or three room flats and need help with utility bills. With the economic downturn, there would be more retrenchments and more will seek aid.
Reflections:
With the economy in bad shape, some low income and middle income families are struggling to make ends meet and the government is trying to help the people with their best ability. Families will also get $340 a child, no matter the birth order. This encourages Singaporeans to have more babies and help parents to cope with the cost of a child.
The government also gives out funds to citizens who require financial assistance, to help them cope with the rising cost of living. Although the government has been helping citizens who are really in need, the government should be aware of the applicant’s financial status and not let citizens rely on the government to support them.

Do you think there is anything that you as students can do to help alleviate the situation of these families? Don't you think that more oft than not, Singaporeans tend to wait for instructions to help than to initiate help?
