Name of book: Never Fear
Author: Scott Frost
Brief summary:
This is a book about a detective who is trying to discover the death of his half brother, who tries to contact her for the very first time on the day he was murdered. Police classified his death as suicide but the detective, Alex, received a cover sheet of the fax from his half brother but the rest didn’t follow. It was later found out that her half brother had wanted to tell something urgently before he was murdered. Soon after, the detective in charge of the case, Williams, was murdered and Alex derived that they both discovered something that the killer did not want others to know about, which was for Alex to find out.
Alex got hold of detective William’s case file on her half brother and stumbles upon a connection to the case of the notorious River killer, who had murdered three women and dumped their bodies by the Los Angeles River, without the killer being found. Alex is horrified to learn that her missing father was the prime suspect of the river killer and also the man who had murdered his own son.
Reflections:
I think this is a very interesting story as Alex is searching for the killer of her brother, which might had been her father. This is a book which describes the scenery quite well even though it is the most boring part of the story but it is quite complicated as it revolves around many characters including suspected killers. There was one scene in the story where the killer had mistakenly murdered Williams. The killer intended to murder Lopez, who saw him while he collected a security tape from the building Lopez works, as he was captured in the security camera while looking for Alex’s brother. However, when LAPD took over the murder of Williams, they thought that Lopez killed him. LAPD killed Lopez, the only eye witness that may identify the killer. This reveals the cruelty of the society when sometimes, even the innocent are harmed. I feel that Alex is a character to admire as she was able to cope with her father murdering two women and her brother being killed.
There are many twist and turns in this story and the suspected killer would always be changing throughout the story making it confusing. There is no doubt that Alex and her partner are smart though the crime remained unsolved.
