Article: Jatropha the miracle plant?
The Straits Times Pg B17

Brief overview:
Fuel is one of the most used items for the world and its price isn’t very cheap. But there is another substitute for the oil palm industries namely the Jatropha plant. It is considered to be much more efficient as a bio-fuel as compared to others such as the famous oil palm and rapeseed. This is due to the fact that its fuel will emits lesser carbon emissions when used in diesel engines and even thought it has lesser percentage yield as compared to palm oil, palm oil is viewed as less sustainable as it is still a food crop and will competes for arable. Hence it is now seen as the future oil supply for the world even though the outcome hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Reflection:
Even though this may bring happiness to many, there are always two-sides of a coin. With the incoming of the Jatropha, oil palm plantations will surely be neglected and in the end causing their owners to suffer a great loss. Also, the Jatropha is also only in an experimental stage and might not necessary bring about profits in the meantime. But if it really succeeds, it will be a great relief to people around the world as oil prices will surely drop into an affordable price with the Jatropha seed as a new resource of bio-fuel. So time will surely tells all whether this new bio-fuel will be a success or a failure.
