Title: FREE FALL
Author: Robert Crais
Genre: PI (private investigator)
Summary:
Elvis Cole is just a detective who can't say no, especially to a girl in a terrible fix. And Jennifer Sheridan qualifies: Her fiance, Mark Thurman, is a decorated LA cop with an elite plainclothes unit, but Jennifer's sure he's in trouble--the kind of serious trouble that only Elvis Cole can help him out of.
Five minutes after his new client leaves his office, Elvis and his partner, the enigmatic Joe Pike, are hip-deep in a deadly situation as they plummet into a world of South Central gangs, corrupt cops, and conspiracies of silence. And before the case is through, every cop in the LAPD will be gunning for a pair of escaped armed-and-dangerous killers--Elvis Cole and Joe Pike.
(The back of the book actually contains a more summarised version of what you have just read, this is conveniently copied from http://www.fictiondb.com/author/robert-crais~free-fall~58443~b.htm)
The story is a bit too hard and too long to explained, but I'll try:
The PI is Elvis Cole, also narrating the story, is meeting up with a client(Jennifer) at the beginning who hired him to find out why is it that for the past weeks her boyfriend was acting strangely.
Her boyfriend who is a plainclothes cop worked with 4 others in a team.
So the story later involved 1.an armed gang, 2.PI and his partner, 3.the other 4 cops.
The gang used an incident to blackmailed the team of cops so that the cops belonged to the gang.
The gang also manages to escape with murder but leaving the PI and his partner taking the rap and they were jailed but they escape from the jail. (reminded you of Mas Selamat?)
PI and partner now were wanted men, while still working on the case...
Ending was when all three sides met and fired guns across, killing three of the cops.
Happy ending for PIs and Jennifer with her boyfriend.
Reflection:
The book was with tonnes of vulgar and full of swearing in dialogues between the characters, some bad words are even spelt differently but still holds the pronunciation of the intended foul word. I think I am not allowed to list some examples here, two bared four u (too bad for you).
Other than that, the story contains a lot of descriptions from the PI narrating, which shows how the PI the author wanted thinks. When he sees a person he never met before, the book will say how tall that person is, a rough estimate of that person's weight... Truly a PI's way of thinking.
There were some scenes that is a bit action packed, with the PI shooting guns and fighting. I enjoyed some of them but some just seem a bit hard to understand and require you to sit up from your couch and start pointing on the ground at several spots to picture the scenario.
The story line is also good but I don't want to leak anything out. You can say that it is worth reading from the first page to the last page. Amazon also gave it 4 out of 5 stars. (does that means that it is very 'cheem'?)
This book was randomly picked from JE library by me when I was with some friends and happened to do a project there. Got to admit that this book was 'anyhow' chosen, sorry Ms Tang.
Oh, look at the time, can't believe it.
