Book Review 1

Title: For one more day
Author: Mitch Albom

The main character of this book is an ex-baseball player nicknamed "Chick" by his friends. The book started by telling us about the things that happened after his mother died. I think he did not like what he did but he still did the things anyway, depression maybe? Actually, after reading the book i thought he was ashamed of being a normal person with a normal job instead of being a professional baseball player who his father would have liked more as a son. Although he was depressed for quite some time, i feel that the last straw that made him want to attempt suicide so many times was that her daughter did not even invite him to her wedding. It was devastating news for a father who had his daughter so close to him when she was younger.

Personally i felt that the book started out very uninteresting, with all the introductions of him family members and the suicide attempts. However, the book became more interesting when he 'saw' his mother who died earlier during one of his suicide attempts. He spent a day with her and had a chance to change his last day with his mother. The last time Chick saw his mother before her death was during her birthday. His parents were divorced and Chick went to her mother's birthday party. Halfway through it, his father called and told him about a chance of playing for a baseball team professionally. Chick lied to every one at the party that he was going to work but he was actually meeting his father. Then, he left that party and his mother.

What hit me most about this book is that it says too much truth and that's what you and I do every day unknowingly too.
For example, have we ever been ashamed of our parents when they made us do something in public that did not look cool? Like, asking us to kiss them goodbye etc. Are we being too self-centered?
Chick was ashamed of his mother when his Halloween costume (toilet paper as a mummy) got destroyed when it rained. Also, he was ashamed of his mother when people said that his mother was flirting with their husbands. He was then ashamed of his mother when she told him she cleaned toilets. He did not know that his mother cleaned toilets to put him through college.

Chick really loved his mother, maybe even more than he loved his father, though he would let on that he tried to please his father more. He knew when his mother was very sad and when he shouldn't ask and just let her be alone. He often took her love for granted too! Maybe that's what we always do, take family's love for granted. It may sound cliche but it's really when you lose something that you start to really cherish it and then regret when it's really gone.

After that one day spent with his mother, he went back to real life. Chick changed for the better, building up better relationship with his daughter and ex-wife. He told those around him," Remember me for these days, not the old ones." It's time to change for the better, as we still have much of our lives to live. Let other people remember us as good persons.

If you read it, i think you would feel your eyes watery(:

Yes. I totally agree with you. This is a book worth reading. Mitch Albom has the ability to make one ponder even of the simplest things in life. When I read this book, it made me reflect and think too. His other books are worth a read too.

This is a good and thorough review. Good job ShiYa.
