Title: Attica
Author: Garry Kilworth
Genre: Short fiction.
Attica is one book that will keep edging you on - encouraging you to flip pages after pages like a drug addict. Attica is a light novel in my opinion that had kept me entertained for several days. It has 352 pages in total, so I suppose that this is a novel that is suitable for anyone.
Three children (Jordy, Chloe and Alex) venture into the attic of their new home in search of a pocket-watch belonging to the previous tenant (Mr Grantham). This pocket-watch, according to Mr Grantham, meant a lot to him as it is given to him by someone dear to him. Jordy and Alex are willing to tag along and complete this task initiated by Chloe.
In Attica, the author did not extensively describe the physical appearance of the characters, instead he highlights on points like Jordy is a sporty elder brother, Chloe is an elder sister who likes reading books while Alex is the youngest introverted brother who likes engineering. (I really like this writing style) These children, in their attempt to recover the watch, wandered beyond the boundaries of their attic they expected and entered a continent-sized world of eccentricity and unbelievable activities, which is filled full with strange inhabitants at the same time. The storyline unfolds as you progress through the pages and I find myself enjoying reading the series of adventures the children encountered, the problems they faced and the how they pull through their souring siblings’ relationship while they try to find their own trapdoor home.
The depth of this book I believe lies in the fact that Chloe, Jordy and Alex are all very different in personality and interests, and the author had them deal with each new problem in extremely diverse ways. However each child overcame their fears while learning and growing on their adventures.
I really enjoyed reading this book and many times I find myself cheering Jordy, Chloe and Alex on when they’re in a tight spot. I also love the weird but original settings of Attica and the strange characters in that world. I strongly recommend this book to everyone based on its unique and powerful storyline, and its ability to entertain.
Xinwei.

How is the author's style of writing similar and different from your own? Are there aspects of the author's writing worth emulating?
