For me, holding the Beijing Olympics is an honour for Asia indeed, but to be counted as a force to be reckoned with? I believe the answer would be we are far from it.

Holding the Beijing Olympics is only a stepping stone for us to show the Westerners that Asians are no weakling. In the past, Asians are thought to be inferior to the Westerners. Through this we would probably change their views on us, but if we were to compare our technology with theirs, we will definitely lose out since they have always been more advanced than us.

The next thing we need to note is that we are threatened by terrorists and riots of unhappy Asians when the Olympics have not even started to prepare, while the Olympics they host are peaceful and exciting. This is one aspect that showed our weakness of not being able to unite as one, when we can’t even achieve unity; we can’t progress on as a power.

Yes, I have to admit the rise of China is indeed an Asian’s proud, and as it new nickname suggest “Rising Dragon”. It tells us of how much unfathomable potential and power hidden within it, but to be able to fully utilize all these within a short period of time is hard and almost impossible. It may take longer periods of time, perhaps 15 to 20 years before we can fully see what is in store for us.

The economy of China on the other hand is rising, but it is not helping many Asian countries since a few decades ago our economy has always been following the USA. That would mean we will still follow the Western economy for perhaps the next few years. With the Western economy badly hit by an economic crisis, many Asian countries will also incur huge losses, thus I have proven my point again of Asia is still far off from being a power to be reckoned with, perhaps enough to light a bulb now, but light up a whole room? You must be dreaming.

Therefore, I disagree for now that we are a power to be reckoned with.

Interesting comment. You are actually quite perceptive to say that it will take another 15-20 years for Asia to catch up as this is the predicted time by experts.

You have used a good word - unfathomable.
