On 31 July 2001, Beijing shocked the world after it was successfully elected as the host city for the XXIX Olympiad during the 112th IOC Session in Moscow, beating Toronto, Paris, Istanbul, and Osaka. After Beijing's victory of winning the host rights, it was evident that the Chinese government has promoted the games to highlight China's emergence on the world stage. The winning of the 2008 Olympic bid is an example of the international recognition of China's social stability, economic progress and the healthy life of the Chinese people.
As the first country in Asia that has successfully clinch the rights to hold an Olympiad, China wants to present its prowess in the international platform by showing that they are not just a economic powerhouse but also of a sporting power to be reckoned with in the world by trying to host the best games in history. Even former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch expressed his opinion that the XXIX Olympiad will be the best Olympiad held unprecedented in the history of the Olympics games.
Beijing had stunned many in the west with its breakthroughs from medals design to Olympics village and its vast resources spent on sports technology to help athletes to recover quickly from their fatigue so as athletes could produce their optimum results and also its futuristic architecture designs of the sport stadiums and the capital city.
As Beijing prepares itself at the centre of the world stage, the city had transformed itself from the dowager of old to a dazzling young star decked out in a stunning and exquisite display of architectural haute couture. Leading Beijing's glamorous makeover is a quartet of buidings that fuse with breakthrough technologies and futuristic environmental design with traditional Chinese motifs. Their radical urban style perfectly embodies China three-part Olympic theme - which is environmental "green", high technology and welcoming people. An example would be the National Aquatic centre known as the water cube which exterior is made of ETFE, a polymer skin which is stronger that steel or concrete.
Also, the emergence of Beijing had give rise to more traditional cultures and traditions around the world, especially in Asia, to be exposed to millions of atheletes, tourists and people after the Chinese government incoporate the fusion of East and West in to their radical urban design of Olympic Village and their new Terminal 3. With an estimated 5 million tourists and 25 billions people set their eyes on this historical moment that belongs to Asia, we should be proud of ourself as we belongs to Asia, this large continent.
To summarise, China had impressed the world on Asia prowess not only in term of strong economic, but also show the world that Asia is also tops in incoporating technologies into architectural design and also may open the doors for more opportunities to other parts of Asia to hold more of such international sports games or events.
