Ordered to pick up litter:

EIGHTY litterbugs took up brooms at four locations around Singapore yesterday and swept the streets as a penance for their anti-social behavior.

The punishment was part of the 100th installment of Corrective Work Order (CWO), which is meant to deter people from littering by making them pick up rubbish in public places.

Since it was implemented 15 years ago, more than 5,800 people have been made to pick up litter as punishment for their crime. It is a weapon that has become increasingly popular in Singapore's long-running battle against litter.

This year, about 1,000 people have been subject to the order, a far cry from the roughly 120 in 2006, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA).

To my opinion, Singaporeans should do their part to keep Singapore uphold the name of a ‘clean and green’ country instead of being a litter bug. We should be responsible for our own litter and should not have the belief of ‘cleaners will clean up for us’.

People should learn their lesson after being fined and ordered to pick up litter. As for litter bugs that are not caught red handed, this should serve as a warning to them to get rid of their bad habit and become a good citizen who are responsible for their own rubbish.

I believe that the credit of Singapore’s ‘clean and green’ title will soon go to our citizens instead of the cleaners with the contribution of everybody.
