Title: Visible racks mean easier tray return at food centre
From: The Straits Time B1

Introduction:

This is the second time Singapore has experimented with us on returning of trays after meal. The first try was executed in 2003 by NEA and it failed. Reason of failed task was that the tray rack was inconveniently located and we not being used at clearing plates.

The second time have improved proposal by having more racks available and volunteers reminding diners to return their trays after meal which is not obtrusive. Results this time round is pleasing and rewarding. The event will be extended out to 80 Kopitiam food courts.

Next year the project will extend out to hawker centres and fast-food outlets island wide.

Reflections:

I am willing to put back my trays after meals in these alfresco dining centres or any dining places. The first try failing was probably due to the high self-esteem we hold of ourselves? Maybe because of that we think that it is gruesome and undignified. The laziness existing within us is also an underlying cause. We not wanting to search for tray racks after meal to put back our trays strongly demonstrate my inference. Another cause could be that since we have cleaners available to clean up the mess, why should we bother?

However, we have to learn to be considerate to other people especially during peak hours. The cleaners would have a busy time and nobody would be there to clean up the mess other than us. Nobody would like to clean up the mess other people had created so it is better for us to do it ourselves.

If we do not do so, we would not realize the mess we have created. This is a way for us to know how inconsiderate we are. Over time, maybe Singapore will be a cleaner and better environment? With lesser spits, puddles of gravy and trays etc. scattered all over the tables and floor, I think it will be.
