Title: Life is tough but they have a dream
Date: December 9 2008
Section: Home Page B7

Summary:
This article talks about Anita, a nine-year-old girl who is a beneficiary of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. Ms Pushpavalli, a single mother does not work, receives money from Anita’s father, whom she divorced last year. There are 8000 pupils who are beneficiaries of The Straits Time school pocket money fund. Anita wanted to be an artist and her mother wanted her to do well academically (something she herself never had the chance to do). In the earlier years, Ms Pushpavalli and her 6 other siblings got only 10 cents of pocket money a day. If the money ran out, they drank tap water and went hungry. Ms Pushpavalli then got married at age 26. Then her son, who is sitting for his N levels in Boys' home demanded money while in his mid-teens. Ms Pushpavalli is unable to help her children in their studies due to her limited education.

Reflection:
I think that this way of helping needy kids is a good way. Children have the rights to study and have basic knowledge. Money is an important aspect in studying too, thus providing money for the students will let the students to gain a lot. I think it is very kind of The Straits times to donate the money to the children. Not only the children can gain knowledge, their parents will be greatly benefited too, they do not need to struggle to support their family and thus lessen their burden. When the children grow up, they can contribute to the society too. Such funds will benefit children like Anita a lot.
