Article: KL Landslide, Police call off search and rescue efforts
The Strait Times, Page A8.

Overview:
Malaysian police called off search-and-rescue operations at a hilltop residential area yesterday, after confirming that there were no more victims feared burried under the massive landslide that occured early last Saturday.
Tonnes of earth and debris killed four people and burried 14 bunglows in the Bukit Antarabanhsa suburb just 10km east of Kuala Lumpur. The four people who are killed are Yogeswary, Surinah, Shaiful Khaz Shaharudin and Ng Yee Peng. The army succeeded in setting up a temporary bridge yesterday evening that would allow thousands of residents to leave the area. They were trapped inside after the main road was cut off by the landslide. However, news reports say some residents are still refusing to leave the area, though they have been advised to evacuate the area because of the slope's instability.

Reflection:
I am touched by the actions of Yogeswary, one of the victims who have died in this massive landslide. She used her body to shield her children from debris and died after a beam fell on her back, fracturing her ribs and causing massive internal bleeding. She was hugging her children close to her body to shield them frim falling debris as she tried to get them to safety. She is willing to sacrifice her life for her children, which shows me the noble love of a mother.

I think that those sutbborn residents should leave the dangerous area as soon as possible as it is still considered unsafe for residents to live there for the time being. There might be a chance that a landslide will happen any moment and if that really happens, they are putting their life in great danger. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Residents should heed the studies conducted by the experts. If they are willing to do so, the loss of lifes and properties could have been prevented.
