Article: If we can afford to spend, why not?
From: The Strait Time, Home, page B8

Summary of the article:
Teens in Singapore doesn't know the importance of the money, even though their parents are facing a financial crisis now. They spent their money on fastfood which are much more expensive than those food sold in the coffee shop. They also spent money on those things that are not needed. In their terms of saving money, is to save up money to buy what they want for themselves. When they don't have money to spend, they will tend to get more money from their parents to spend. Maybe due to peer pressure, the teens now tend to spend money on things that they can't afford. There are also some interview from the teens and below is some examples of the teens nowadays.
1. " I would rather eat fast food than go to the kopitiam to eat as the food is not so nice."
2. "I rent DVDs quite often. I spend about $200 a month on them."
In this article, there are also some tips for parents on how to educate their children the importance of money.
Example: Start giving a child a fixed allowance at a young age, so that he learns the value of money.

Reflection:
I think that the teens now should put themselves into the shoes of their parents. It's never easy to earn money now as there is the financial crisis. They should learn to save up money to buy those things that are needed so that they don't have to get more money from their parents and add on to their burden. The money they save can also pay for their transport fees and thus, lighten the burden of their parents.

I think that the parents should not pamper the teens when they are young. They should educate them the value and the importance of money. Parents should not give money to their children whenever they ask for it. They should know the reasons first and only when it is very urgent, then they will give.
