Book title: Exit Laughing
Author: Stuart Palmer
Summary:
This poison-pen doggerel brought along Hilegarde Withers to investigate what was going on in that section of Miracle-Paradox film studios where the cartoons featuring "Peter Penguin" were made. On her way to report for her first day's work in the studio Hilegrade found a corpse; someone had fed Larry Reed, a cartoon artist, with a lethal dose of poison-ivy.
Hildegrade was quite capable of taking a murder in her stride, but her erstwhile collaborator, Inspector Oscar Piper, felt sure that the old girl was getting out of her depth: he flew into Los Angeles from new york to help her.
There were more poison pens and more poison-ivy before the undaunted Hildegarde unveiled the murderer of Miracle-paradox in as sensation a climax as stuart palmer ever fashioned for her.
Reflection:
A typical mystery story trying to find out whose the murderer. This story is bought to life by adding all sorts of details, the life of a cartoonist , how does a cartoonist work, the various mindset of a law-breaker and so on. The story is divided into chapters with a famous saying as the opening making the story more orderly. The story is kind of enriching when we get to know that crime breakers actually return to the scene of his crime, poison is a woman way, writers of poison-pen letter always send one to themselve.
From the content of the valentine letter send to each of the victims, i can tell that the author made a special effort to describe each of the characters in a unique way. The story is kind of misleading in the first part misleading people on whose the killer is but it is enjoying but in the end it was actually just a concidebce and the killer is someone else unpredicted,
I like the ending a lot, law -offenders are eventually caught up with justice and the part that the killer gave away himself was totally nice for he did not expect to give away the whole thing from just minor details like how many fingers on a penguin hand. The mystery was unvealed in the end.
