Name of book: Poirot investigates
Brief summary:
This is a book about mystery and has many short stories. One of the stories was entitled “The case of the missing will. “
Violet was an orphan and his uncle, Andrew, was her only living relation. Andrew immigrated to Australia where he did very well and became a very rich man. He treated Violet exceedingly kind and treated her in every way as thought she was her own daughter. He was a man with little or no education and he especially opposed to the education of women. He proposed to bring Violet up as a girl who knew how to do practical housework, but she rebelled as she knew she had a good brain.
Violet proved herself and won a scholarship and that was when she had several arguments with her uncle as he intended her to be his sole heiress. However, Violet intended to lead her own life and parted with him. Nine years passed and her uncle died and left an extraordinary will. The will stated that within one year of his death, he will own all his fortune for Violet to prove her wits and at the end of the period, having his wits proved better then Violet, all his large fortune would be pass to charitable organizations.
Poirot and his assistant inferred that there could be a second will that would pass all his fortune to her or even a large sum of money for her to look for…
Reflections:
I think this is a good story to read with a good plot. Violet is an admirable character in this story and she was willing to give up a large fortune to pursue her own dreams. Even though her uncle had deliberately made the extraordinary will out of anger, she did not think that her uncle’s actions were harsh and instead blame it on herself that she wanted to choose her own path. Even though Violet did not look for the second will herself, I thought she was smart enough to look for a detective to unravel the mystery for her. In the end, the detective, Poirot found a hidden will in disappearing ink and all the money went to Violet. Even if Violet and her uncle quarreled over her future, I feel that they both cared about each other even when they were separated for such a long time as she did not blame her uncle for not directly leaving his fortune to her. Her uncle wanted her to lead a carefree life and what he did was for her own good. In the end, her uncle respected her decision and let her go, but I feel that he still cared about Violet before he died as he still left his fortune to Violet, though in a different and surprising way.
