2nd Newspaper review:
Weekend TODAY 13/12
Smoking Ban; Clean Air Around Office buildings
Extract from article:
The smoking ban will be extended to include the space within a 5m radius of the entrances and exits of buildings such as offices. Non-air conditioned offices, too, will become no-light up zones.
In the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) revised rules, offices aside, public places where Singaporeans can light up will shrink further. The ban will cover hotel lobbies, non-air conditioned malls and mom-and-pop shops in HDB heartlands, playgrounds and exercise areas — places where many young and old hang out.
My thoughts:
The new smoking ban will take effect from 1st JAN 2009, and i am very glad that there are more restrictions on smoking. As many of you know, smoking is definitely bad for our health as it contains nicotin and other bad stuffs that will damage our lungs. Worst still, they are not absorbing all the damage from smoking, secondhand smokers(people around smokers) are said to take in more damaging effects to their body if they breathe in smoke regularly. For me, I hate it when smokers alight a bus just after smoking, frankly it stinks because they still have the "cigarette smell".
Smoking has been banned in food outlets since 2006 and in entertainment outlets such as pubs since July last year. I think NEA has done a good job in taking care of the public's health by implementing ban after ban. If you have been to China, you would know how much effort our government has put in to keep most places the public frequent " Smoke-free".
However, we cannot say that it is a crime to smoke as it could be a means of distress to smokers. Maybe NEA has gone a little to far in implementing so many bans in a single go and smokers cannot accept the fact. Quoted: “I understand why they ban smoking at bus interchanges or community centres, where many families gather,” she said. “But the new changes are too much.”
