Magazine review(3 of 4)

Magazine: Newsweek
Article: President Obama

Brief summary: Well it's November 5th and you're watching CNN. You see the Democratic nominee Barack Obama racking up states one by one. Soon, the whole election seems loopsided. The attention then shifts to President-elect Obama giving his victory speech before his supporters. The 200,000 strong crowd goes wild, chanting 'Yes We Can'. If you were for Obama, you will most probably share the same expression as those in Grant Park, Chicago.

Reflection: Barack Obama has broken the barriers of race as old as America is. I personally feel this is a defining moment in not only American politics but to the international community, as he appeals so much more to the world than John McCain. This thumping by Obama though was expected from me, as a Democrat should've been able to win a pluraity of the poplular vote, but what mattered to me(and probably America) was who is the Democratic nominee? By choosing Senator Barack Obama, his policy of 'change' resonates with the American people. After all, their country is in such a mess after 8 years of George W. Bush, the incumbent Republican President.

Consequence: The world will now see America as a place where all things are possible, like an African-American being elected President. Although the American government is flooded with problems(which made me think: Who would want to be President?), the Obama administration will bring new hope to the people. He will promise the 'change' America needs, aspire many people to be like him, and maybe make the world a little better.

"And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down, we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security, we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright, tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope."

Yes, you are right. It is a defining moment for the world for America to have a black President for the first time in history. If we look back in time, it is always a Republican president that "cause" a economic recession and after which a Democrat president will pick up the pieces and rebuild and reshape the economy. This time seems to, yet again, re-confirm this pattern. There is much for the world to anticipate with Obama. Perhaps it is time for the West to learn a few things from the Asian economy where there is more control by the government. Do notice that Asia, while affected, did not suffer as much damage in this current economic depression. If there is damage, it is more of a by-product more than it is a product of mismanagement of the Asian economy.
