1) Although having 18 strokes of cane is very harsh on him but he deserved it, these 18 strokes really make up for the other years of jail sentence that he should have received other than only having 9 years and 2 months of sentencing. Therefore I think it’s fair.
He is too compulsive and did not think of the consequences for his actions. Maybe the bad break up with his girlfriend in March last year created a hard impact on him, resulting in him, having wild thoughts about killing others he hate and himself. Having telling three different stories to three different people may be confusing and for whether the judge should give him a heavy sentence. Adding on, his childhood was pretty bad with his abusive mother leaving with his sister before he was even nine, growing up in a single parent family with no mother love. To a child, parental guidance may be very important to them and that period of time is crucial to them because any changes may change his views towards life and goals. Even his grandmother and younger brother that he was very close with died. Due to his past, this may be why he is so dependent on Ms Liew, his previous girlfriend. So when she left him, he felt that the world was unfair and wanted to do something others would have never thought of. Which is to smuggle gun and bullets out of NS to kill or even commit robbery. It’s wrong of him to bring the weapons out into the city where there is so many people, threatening everybody’s life even when they do not know that he is armed. As mentioned, Singapore’s Armed Forces reputy has also been brought down. So it’s fair.
It’ll make him think of what is right or wrong when he is serving his sentence.
2) I think that selling of organs should only be legalized if they do not use impartial methods for the transplant and not affecting the donor’s life. For eg. Poor farmers have been targeted upon and being duped to sell their organs for money as they might need money desperately and the amount of money that they received might be lesser than expected or agreed and some may not even pay for it.
Although I think it should be legalized but there is ought to be some qualifications or rules. Just like what everyone knows, some basic measures is to make sure, if the organ is away from the donor’s body, we have to make sure the donor can live well without it and maybe something linked to the blood type for more complicated organ transplants. The surgeons need to know whether a certain organ can be used before the transplant and not after taking the organ out. Risking the dangers of the donor’s life as the organ would have to be placed back into the donor’s body.
The possible outcomes may be, more people would be able to lead a new lease on life. For example, they might change their old habits of consuming alcoholic drinks due to their liver being damaged before. However some may be complacent. They will have the mindset that there is always another organ for him or her to carry out transplant and not treasure their body. So there might be advantages and disadvantages, but if organ transplants are legalized, many will treasure their body/ life more.
