What is Globalisation?

To put it simply, it means the world is getting smaller. It comes from the word Global, therefore globalisation means how all the countries in the world are communicating with each other through our technological inventions like email, telephones, internet, aeroplanes, so on and so forth.

Due to all these conveniences that we have, companies are getting more and more interested to invest in many less developed countiries, so as to save cost and to bring up profit margins. While, in the process, many less developed countries are getting investments and in return getting jobs because of all these investments; others are losing their dignity. This is because many companies, in order to earn more with less, have turned to exploitation of workers. Also many actually used underaged workers because these children need the jobs to support their improverished families, even though their jobs pay them only 6-18 cents per day. Such is the reality of globalisation.

Singapore has benefitted from it because we are a rich and developed nation with a government who regulates our laws. Imagine you are one of those living in the backward area of Vietnam, China or somewhere in Africa, would Globalisation be able to help you?

Start reading the newspapers, not only from the Home or Sports page. It helps to widen your perspective. In this very advanced society, you could actually have googled the word "Globalisation" and find out a wee bit. Thank you all those who posted. I thought your comments were good even though not all of you knew all about it.

Don't be afraid to put in your comment. At least you tried. "No Venture, No Gain"

Globalization in its literal sense is the process of globalizing, transformation of some things into global ones. It can be described as a process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and functioning together. This process is a combination of economic, technological, sociocultural and political forces.
Effects of globalization:
Industrial - emergence of worldwide production markets and broader access to a range of foreign products for consumers and companies
Financial - emergence of worldwide financial markets and better access to external financing for corporate, national and subnational borrowers
Economic - realization of a global common market, based on the freedom of exchange of goods and capital.
Globalization has made more people come together to strike for their goals in life.
Living in a globalised world, make no boundaries for all.Distance is no longer an obstruct for people to know each other.In my opinion,I think that Globalisation is a great achievement made by everyone,from ancient to now.

Globalisation has both its benefits & drawbacks.

Some of the benefits is that globalization brings people from all over the world closer together, and realizes all the countries' wishes of having a Common Market, so that trading is tax-free.

However, we should spare a thought for citizens living in less developed countries. Workers there have to work long hours yet they get low pay, which I believe is pretty unjust. Also, the point about child enslavement. That is quite common in poorer countries, where big companies enslave young children to work for them. In my opinion, some jobs are too strenuous for them. {as shown in the video - a young boy carrying a lot of bricks}
Tourism is good for countries, in the sense that countries can earn profits from it. But, on the other hand, as shown in the video, it causes some form of sexual abuse to children. It is disconcerting to find out that 68% of children in less developed countries have their first sexual experience with a tourist already.
